My name is Elisa Ayala, originally from Mexico and now living in Jackson, WY, in the last 7 years I have developed as a folk cartonería (paper mache) artist, this has led me the opportunity to participate with my art on the most important Mexican national folk-art contests. In 2018, I won my first national folk art award called "De Principio a Fin Mexican Popular Traditions" where I got the 1st Place in the category Mexican nativity scenes on paper and cardboard, later in 2019 I won 3 national prizes of Mexican folk art which were the 1st Place in the National Mexican Popular Toy Contest, 2nd Place in the Grand Prize of Folk Art and 1st Place in the Contest Mexican Nativity, these achievements have allowed me to obtain opportunities national and international to demonstrate, train and exhibit my work.
Some of these opportunities were being invited by the Embassy of Mexico in the Netherlands to give conferences and Mexican folk art workshops in various cities of Holland, at the same time I was invited by the Cobra Museum of Modern Art in the City of Amstelveen for a live Cartonería making demonstration during the opening of the Intens Mexico, exhibition where as well I impart cartonería workshops for children, adults and training for museum teachers. I was recently selected for the fourth time to exhibit at the International Folk Art Market in Santa Fe, New Mexico. As part of my activities as an artisan, I teach traditional mexican cartonería to children and adults, seeking in this way to motivate the preservation and appreciation of Mexican cartonería.
